Rotterdam Rules in Denmark and Norway

Public consultations have been issued by the Danish Ministry of Business and Growth and the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security inviting comments to recommendations from their respective Maritime Law Commissions concerning ratification and implementation of the Rotterdam Rules.

The Norwegian Maritime Law Commission, chaired by Professor Erik Røsæg from the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law and with Joakim Bronder (Gard) as one of its members, recommends that the Rules of the Convention - with some exceptions - should be implemented in Chapter 13 of the Norwegian Maritime Code.

The Danish Maritime Law Commission has a similar recommendation, proposing implementation through a new Chapter 13 of the Danish Maritime Code.

The two commissions have worked closely together on the proposals. In order to preserve the almost identical Nordic maritime codes with similar legislation, Finland and Sweden have been invited to participate and comment during the deliberations. Sweden is expected to commence their own revision of the Swedish Maritime Code in 2012.

Consultation deadline Norway: 15 October 2012
