Purpose & Main focus:

The aim of this course is to give an introduction to adjusting of particular average claims. The adjusting will be based on relevant clauses in the Nordic Marine Insurance Plan of 2013, Version 2019.

Main focus is on the Nordic claims handling model with in-house claims handlers and adjusters employed by the insurance companies. The course also looks at how to handle a claim from a shipowner's and insurance broker's perspective. This includes how to present a claim to your insurer by setting up a General Account with necessary supporting documents.

(For the sake of good order, please note that we do not introduce adjusting of General Average or Loss of Hire as both are adjusted different from an ordinary Hull and Machinery claims, and a three day course does not permit these to be incorporated.)

After attending the programme, the participant shall be able to:

  • understand the basic in the claims handling process from a practical point of view,
  • set up or advice on Owners General Account and identify the relevant supporting documents,
  • draw a simple adjustment with reference to the valid §§ in the Nordic Plan,
  • recognize the structure, and read and understand a more advanced claim adjustment put up by an experienced claims adjuster.

Participation:

The training course is aimed at professionals working within the Marine Insurance Industry today (i.e. insurance companies, brokers, shipowners).

Prior knowledge of the Nordic Plan is necessary, either through completion of the Cefor Academy/SMA "Nordic Marine Insurance Plan training course", the previous Norwegian Plan training course or similar training and/or experience with the Plan.

This course may count with 13 (15) teaching hours towards continuing professional training and development requirements found in Article 10 no. 2 of the EU Insurance Distribution Directive 2016/97 (‘IDD’).

Please note that IDD requirements may vary depending on your domicile and its’ transposition of the EU Directive into national, domestic law. Cefor cannot guarantee the application of the above in your country of domicile.
